Renovation vs extension: which is right for your period home?
May 2025

This is one of the most common questions we are asked by inner-Melbourne homeowners, and there is no single right answer. It depends on your home, your block, your council overlay, and what you are actually trying to achieve.
A renovation focuses on improving what already exists: updating the kitchen and bathrooms, reconfiguring internal spaces, restoring period features, improving energy performance. A renovation is often the right choice when the existing footprint is fundamentally sound and the issue is quality or condition rather than size.
An extension adds floor space, typically to the rear or upper level of the home. It makes sense when the current floor plan genuinely cannot accommodate how you want to live, and when your block and planning scheme allow it.
The two are not mutually exclusive. Many of our best projects combine both: a considered extension to add space where it is needed, paired with a renovation of the existing home to bring everything to the same standard.
The most important thing is to start with a clear brief, and ideally with a good architect or designer who understands period homes. We are happy to refer clients to designers we have worked with and trust. Get in touch if you would like a recommendation.
